Visit to ATOMKI Institute for Nuclear Research, Hungary

Prof. Ihor Kadenko has been visiting the HUN-REN Institute for Nuclear Research (HUN-REN ATOMKI, Debrecen, Hungary) in the 20-24 April 2026 period with the aim to develop and strengthening a Hungarian – Ukrainian scientific and educational cooperation in fundamental and applied nuclear physics.

During this visit there were conducted several meetings to discuss joint projects in areas related to Euratom as well as future joint participation of TSUNK and HUN-REN ATOMKІ in European scientific project calls in areas of applied nuclear physics, medical physics, nuclear energy, including Euratom program projects.

Now ATOMKI runs APRENDE  – (Addressing PRiorities of Evaluated Nuclear Data in Europe  101164596 / Call ID: HORIZON-EURATOM-2023-NRT-01

an ambitious European initiative designed to address the critical demand for accurate and advanced nuclear reaction and decay data. These data are essential for modelling and simulation (M&S) tools crucial to both energy-related applications—including nuclear fission and fusion—as well as diverse non-energy fields such as healthcare, space exploration, and radiation protection. With a clear focus on enhancing nuclear data precision and reliability, APRENDE aims to significantly upgrade the simulation capabilities relied upon by European stakeholders. The project specifically targets application areas deemed of highest priority within the European Union and its member states, ensuring direct benefits to critical sectors.

A key outcome of APRENDE is the development of a strategic roadmap. This roadmap will identify existing data gaps, propose advancements in capabilities, and incorporate cutting-edge technologies, ultimately reinforcing Europe’s global leadership in nuclear science and safety.

Funded through the European Union’s EURATOM programme, APRENDE is a collaborative effort involving 39 prominent European institutions. Coordinated by CIEMAT (Spain), this ambitious project will span 48 months, positioning Europe at the forefront of nuclear research and innovation.

Prof. I. Kadenko  told about the NURECAB project, which is currently being implemented by the TSUNK in collaboration with other partners within the framework of the Euratom progamme, the achievements already obtained, the prospects and the expected impact of the project results on the nuclear industry of Ukraine.

The NURECAB project (GA No. 101173510) is funded by the European Union under the Euratom Research and Training Programme (Horizon Europe). The views and opinions expressed are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Commission.
