The Department of Nuclear Physics was established in September 1945 at the initiative of Academician O.I. Leipunskyi. More…

The Department is known for its contributions in the fields of fast neutron physics, accelerator technology, nuclear spectroscopy, nuclear electronics, applied nuclear physics, nuclear energy, and high energy physics.

Laboratory work for specialized courses is conducted both in teaching laboratories and directly within scientific research groups. Bachelor’s and Master’s theses are carried out at the department and at leading internationally renowned research centers.

The department maintains close scientific collaborations with the following institutions: the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN, Switzerland), GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research (Germany), Argonne National Laboratory (USA), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, Austria), Jožef Stefan Institute (Slovenia), Institute for Nuclear Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kyiv), University of Debrecen (Hungary), and others.

A strong experimental base and close cooperation with research institutes and universities both in Ukraine and abroad enable the department to train highly qualified specialists and tackle challenges in various fields of science and technology.

Faculty members of the department have worked in numerous research centers in Switzerland, Sweden, Italy, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Croatia, Slovenia, and the USA, and have visited scientific institutions in Japan, Austria, and Mongolia.

Since 2001, the Department of Nuclear Physics has been actively involved in research conducted within international collaborations in Switzerland (CERN), Germany (GSI), and Utrecht University (Netherlands).
Students and postgraduates of the department have the opportunity to specialize in the following fields: experimental nuclear physics, nuclear energy, high energy physics, accelerator physics, heavy ion physics, and medical physics (application of nuclear physics methods for cancer treatment).

The department pays special attention to nuclear energy. In addition to training specialists, it conducts research on the safety analysis of nuclear power plants using 3D core simulation codes, transient processes, and potential accident scenarios, including those for foreign nuclear power plants. Some of these studies are funded by the U.S. Department of Energy within the framework of the International Nuclear Safety Program, while others are supported by Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

For the development and creation of fast neutron sources, a group of department staff — V.I. Stryzhak, H.I. Prymenko, and O.S. Kukhlenko — received the State Prize of Ukraine in 1986.

In 2000, the following staff members — I.M. Kadenko, B.Yu. Leshchenko, V.K. Maidaniuk, H.I. Prymenko, H.O. Prokopets, and V.A. Shevchenko — were awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology for the development and implementation of instrumentation systems used in nuclear physics and energy.

Among the department’s graduates are over 30 Doctors of Science and 150 Candidates of Science.

By Rector’s Order No. 187-92 dated April 15, 2022, the department received its new name: Department of Nuclear Physics and High Energy Physics.
